Lung Cancer Screening Program

The GE Lightspeed VCT with ASiR, a $1.1 million investment, is one of the fastest computed tomography (CT) scanners on the market. The multi-slice spiral computed tomography (CT) scanner in 30-seconds, can detect a smaller knoblike lump or cancer more accurately than does standard chest x-rays. The cancer screening procedure is noninvasive, painless and uses low-dose x-rays to screen the lungs. It allows radiologist to look at 64 different levels, or slice images of the lungs using a rotating X-ray beam, generating thin cross sectional images for precise three-dimensional imaging of the abdomen, brain, spine and other organs.

“The CT scanner decreases the procedure time, and provides improved patient comfort. It allows for more detailed images to be created, thereby reducing the radiation exposure,” commented Sidney G. Friedman, M.D., Radiology Medical Director and Radiation Safety Officer at Beverly Hospital, “ This new addition is also a breakthrough in applying CT technology to cardiac care and enables Beverly to perform cardiac calcium scoring and CT coronary angiography.”

The Lung Cancer Screening Program at Beverly Hospital consists of a brief health history questionnaire, provision of smoking cessation materials and a low dose CT-Scan at a nominal cost of $199. A single visit normally takes 45 minutes.  Follow-up evaluation will be required if abnormal tests are revealed.
